Curriculum Vitae

I help students discover that history is not about memorizing dates. It is about asking better questions and uncovering stories that explain the world we live in today. Whether you are a future teacher, a first-generation college student, or someone still figuring out whether college is the right fit, I will meet you where you are and help you build the skills and confidence to succeed. My students have gone on to pursue opportunities they may not have imagined when they first arrived on campus.

Areas of Expertise

I am a historian of Egypt, the Middle East, and the Islamic world, with a special interest in the social history of medicine. My research explores how public health, empire, and crisis intersect, often in ways that deepen social divisions, especially in colonial Egypt during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. I bring this perspective into the classroom to help students connect global history to the issues we face today.

Teaching Philosophy

I know that starting university can feel intimidating, especially if you are not sure college is 鈥渇or you.鈥 In my classes, we build a welcoming learning community where students learn from one another as much as from me. Together, we ask big questions: How do we know what we know about the past? Whose stories get told? And why does history keep changing? Many students who begin by thinking they 鈥渁ren鈥檛 history people鈥 discover that they have been thinking like historians all along. I am committed to helping each student find their own path and develop the confidence to pursue it.

Outside the Classroom

I am also an active public historian, co-hosting podcasts, leading workshops, and organizing study tours for educators in Egypt, Morocco, Turkey, and Uzbekistan. Outside of work, you will usually find me exploring new foods, photographing art and architecture, traveling, visiting museums, or making friends with cats and dogs.
